What is RPA
Robotic Process Automation enables automation of business processes that are typically difficult to automate due to limitations of the underlying technology architecture (no API or integration) or the complexity of the business process dealing with unstructured data (e.g. email, pdfs, websites).
Current State of RPA
Many tools have existed in the past to automate business processes from packaged solutions (e.g. Oracle, SAP) to middleware (e.g. Mulesoft, Pega) to Document / Content Management System with workflows (e.g. OpenText, AlFresco). However, as the automation took hold, new opportunities of automation emerged:

Future of RPA
Even though the core of RPA is currently built on automation of repetitive and predictable processes, future of RPA has tremendous potential in leveraging cognitive automation. At its core, leveraging Natural Language Processing, simple AI techniques, Intelligent OCR and bringing them together to realize a business process is key to a mature RPA implementation.
